Job 38:1 – 21

[The Lord]

(text)

Then out of the storm the Lord spoke to Job.

This is truly unique in human history. I believe that you are speaking once and for all to all those who would put themselves in the place of God / criticize what he does (Job 34:33; Romans 9:21-22).

Who are you to question my wisdom
    with your ignorant, empty words?

Your plans are infinitely vast and wonderful beyond what we can think or imagine, Lord! Please grant me the priviledge of participating in them.

What holds up the pillars that support the earth?
Who laid the cornerstone of the world?
In the dawn of that day the stars sang together,
and the heavenly beings shouted for joy.

Eternity past – before the creation / the “beginning” (Genesis 1:1). May the heavenly beings shout once again for joy (Luke 15:10). Is a parallel being drawn here between the stars and the angels (Revelation 12:3-4)?

Who closed the gates to hold back the sea
when it burst from the womb of the earth?

There is something mysterious about the sea, both because of what we see (Revelation 12:18-13:1) and what we don’t see (Revelation 21:1).

Has anyone ever shown you the gates
that guard the dark world of the dead?

King Saul got a glimpse (1 Samuel 28:10-19). Thank you, Jesus (Revelation 1:18)!

Do you know where the light comes from
or what the source of darkness is?
Can you show them how far to go,
    or send them back again?
I am sure you can, because you’re so old
and were there when the world was made!

It really is ridiculous when you think about it, how transitory we are compared to you, Lord (Isaiah 40:6-8). Accomplish your wonderful will (Matthew 6:9-10).
