Are we being robbed of our uniqueness?
Then the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which they had built, and he said, “Now then, these are all one people and they speak one language… Soon they will be able to do anything they want! Let us go down and mix up their language so that they will not understand each other.” So the Lord scattered them all over the earth, and they stopped building the city. The city was called Babylon, because there the Lord mixed up the language of all the people, and from there he scattered them all over the earth.
(Genesis 11:5-9)
Here we are once again at the dawn of time, shortly after the Great Flood in the days of Noah. And once again we see the appearance of God seemingly taken by surprise and needing to put in place a “stop gap” measure. This time, it’s to prevent mankind from realizing its potential. Now does that represent what’s really going on – or is God once again “hiding his game”? 😊
After this I looked, and there was an enormous crowd—no one could count all the people! They were from every race, tribe, nation, and language, and they stood in front of the throne and of the Lamb, dressed in white robes and holding palm branches in their hands.
(Revelation 7:9)
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The first heaven and the first earth disappeared, and the sea vanished. And I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God… The greatness and the wealth of the nations will be brought into the city.
(Revelation 21:1-2, 26)
Here we are at the end of time, shortly after the culmination of all things. Once again we see the reality of God enacting what had been his plan all along: to bring all the diverse beauty of the nations into eternity! Moreover God is actively at work presently to protect the uniqueness of each:
The angel said to me, “Daniel, …I have come in answer to your prayer. The angel prince of the kingdom of Persia opposed me for twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief angels, came to help me, because I had been left there alone in Persia. I have come to make you understand what will happen to your people in the future.”
(Daniel 10:11-14)
The Most High assigned nations their lands; he determined where peoples should live. He assigned to each nation a heavenly being…
(Deuteronomy 32:8)
No surprise then that now that the “cat is out of the bag”, the Creature is actively at work trying to destroy what God is doing. Take Casablanca where I live, for example. The streets have recently become inundated with fast-food ads from McDonald’s, Burger King, KFC, etc. Is it about selling another Big Mac? No. It’s about aggressively replacing time old traditions with a universal culture. [Now in fairness, I wouldn’t have been smart enough to figure this out – a few cherished former colleagues brought this to my attention!] And do we need mention the Hollywood Juggernaut with all the values that it spews out? Big Macs and Barbie movies certainly aren’t evil in and of themselves. But are we being robbed of our uniqueness?
