Job 42

[Epilogue]

(text)

Then Job answered the Lord.

I know, Lord, that you are all-powerful;
that you can do everything you want.

Truly nothing is too difficult for you, Lord (Jeremiah 32:27). You accomplished your will with Job despite Satan being between you and him (Job 1 – 2)! You used the Accuser in his attempts to harm and, like in all of human history, at the same time totally marginalized him.

You ask how I dare question your wisdom
when I am so very ignorant.
I talked about things I did not understand,
about marvels too great for me to know.

I am there, Holy God. Lead on (Isaiah 42:16).

You told me to listen while you spoke
and to try to answer your questions.
In the past I knew only what others had told me,
but now I have seen you with my own eyes.
So I am ashamed of all I have said
and repent in dust and ashes.

May our relationship go much deeper than only what others have told me, Heavenly Father (Hebrews 10:19-22)!

After the Lord had finished speaking to Job, he said to Eliphaz, “I am angry with you and your two friends, because you did not speak the truth about me, the way my servant Job did.”

Lying for God in an attempt to defend him (Job 13:7-8)! May I ever be a faithful witness, Lord (Revelation 3:14).

Then, after Job had prayed for his three friends, the Lord made him prosperous again and gave him twice as much as he had had before.

The Lord blessed the last part of Job’s life even more than he had blessed the first.

We have to hold on (Lamentations 3:22-33).

Job lived a hundred and forty years after this, long enough to see his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. And then he died at a very great age.

So I would put Job’s life some 2 or 3 generations before the patriarch Abram / Abraham (Genesis 11:18-25) who would have heard of the encounter. We stand on the shoulders of those who go before us.
