2 Samuel 7:1 – 11

(verses)

King David was settled in his palace, and the Lord kept him safe from all his enemies. Then the king said to the prophet Nathan, “Here I am living in a house built of cedar, but God’s Covenant Box is kept in a tent!”

Nathan answered, “Do whatever you have in mind, because the Lord is with you.” But that night the Lord said to Nathan…

Fascinating. Here we have the model to come (Romans 12:2) followed by the intervention of a prophet to modify the direction. Are there other examples of this? Events that change the course of history? Acts 8:26-40?

“From the time I rescued the people of Israel from Egypt until now, I have never lived in a temple; I have traveled around living in a tent.”

Much like Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Hebrews 11:8-10) to say nothing of the Messiah being born in a barn (Luke 2:11-12) and having no place to call home (Matthew 8:20).

“So tell my servant David that I, the Lord Almighty, say to him, ‘I took you from looking after sheep in the fields and made you the ruler of my people Israel. I have been with you wherever you have gone

There among the sheep, David was king of Israel (1 Samuel 16:11-13). And before this came to be in all its fullness (2 Samuel 5:1-5), God was preparing him to assume that role. And while Saul looked the part (1 Samuel 10:24), he was never prepared for it. And as for me, Father, are you preparing me to assume some role? Which?

I promise to keep you safe from all your enemies and to give you descendants.

May you grant me spiritual descendants, Father. May I figure in the list of Hebrews 11.
