2 Samuel 6:16 – *

(verses)

As the Box was being brought into the city, Michal, Saul’s daughter, looked out of the window and saw King David dancing and jumping around in the sacred dance, and she was disgusted with him.

Much stronger in the French version I read (“mépris” = contempt). The love of a woman (1 Samuel 18:20)… Thank you for sparing me all this, Father.

They brought the Box and put it in its place in the Tent that David had set up for it. Then he offered sacrifices and fellowship offerings to the Lord. When he had finished offering the sacrifices, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord Almighty and distributed food to them all. He gave each man and woman in Israel a loaf of bread, a piece of roasted meat, and some raisins. Then everyone went home.

Quite modest in comparison with Solomon (1 Kings 8:62-66). But then again, is that the point (Leviticus 5:7-13; 2 Samuel 24:24; Luke 21:1-4)?

Afterward, when David went home to greet his family, Michal came out to meet him. “The king of Israel made a big name for himself today!” she said. “He exposed himself like a fool in the sight of the servant women of his officials!”

Coming down from what was arguably the high point of his life, David is confronted with contempt in his own household. What a wake-up call. Reminds me of Jesus coming from the mountain top experience (where his appearance was transformed) down to a complete mess and religious bickering (Mark 9:2-29).

David answered, “I was dancing to honor the Lord, who chose me instead of your father and his family to make me the leader of his people Israel.”

David went right to the heart of the matter, exposing the source of her contempt. May I likewise do the same, Lord (Luke 13:17; 1 Kings 3:16-28; Jeremiah 6:27).

“And I will go on dancing to honor the Lord…”

May I rejoice continually before you, Lord (Philippians 4:4).

“…and will disgrace myself even more. You may think I am nothing…!”

Again, the French version: “lower myself”, “humble myself”. May I ever make this a lifestyle, Father (2 Corinthiens 11:30; 12:9-10).
