David’s men went back to him and told him what Nabal had said. “Buckle on your swords!” he ordered, and they all did. David also buckled on his sword and left with about four hundred of his men, leaving two hundred behind with the supplies.
Ouch. When did this technology come to the Israelites (1 Samuel 13:19-22)? I once thought that it was when David sejourned in the Philistine controlled territories (1 Samuel 27:1-4) but that came later…
One of Nabal’s servants said to Nabal’s wife Abigail, “Have you heard? David sent some messengers from the wilderness with greetings for our master, but he insulted them. Yet they were very good to us; they never bothered us, and all the time we were with them in the fields, nothing that belonged to us was stolen. They protected us day and night the whole time we were with them looking after our flocks.”
May I stand in the breach / be a wall of protection for others, Father (Ezekial 22:30). May you be that for me (2 Kings 6:15-17).
Abigail quickly gathered two hundred loaves of bread, two leather bags full of… She was riding her donkey around a bend on a hillside when suddenly she met David and his men coming toward her.
Very intelligent. She used the terrain to make her arrival a surprise, which then afforded her the opportunity to speak. May I be so astute in my communication, Lord.
David had been thinking, “Why did I ever protect that fellow’s property out here in the wilderness? Not a thing that belonged to him was stolen, and this is how he pays me back for the help I gave him!”
Another “just then” coincidence (1 Samuel 23:26-28). 😊
“May God strike me dead if I don’t kill every last one of those men before morning!”
Men = “those who pisseth against the wall.” David was “down to earth”. 😊Along with 2 Samuel 12:5-6, are these the only times David takes a solemn oath?
When Abigail saw David, she quickly dismounted and threw herself on the ground at David’s feet, and said to him, “Please, sir, listen to me! …It is the Lord who has kept you from taking revenge and killing your enemies. And now I swear to you by the living Lord that your enemies and all who want to harm you will be punished like Nabal.”
Abigail truly had spiritual vision (Romans 12:19). May I be such a godsend to others, Lord – and may you send my way those like her who prevent me from sinning against you.
